@Nonexistent_Admin

What are causing these errors:

10:26:44.089527 ERROR [COM]: aRC=VBOX_E_INVALID_OBJECT_STATE (0x80bb0007) aIID={b2547866-a0a1-4391-8b86-6952d82efaa0} aComponent={MachineWrap} aText={The given session is busy}, preserve=false aResultDetail=0
10:47:50.716886 ERROR [COM]: aRC=E_FAIL (0x80004005) aIID={b2547866-a0a1-4391-8b86-6952d82efaa0} aComponent={SessionMachine} aText={This machine does not have any snapshots}, preserve=false aResultDetail=0
10:47:51.325331 ERROR [COM]: aRC=VBOX_E_INVALID_OBJECT_STATE (0x80bb0007) aIID={4afe423b-43e0-e9d0-82e8-ceb307940dda} aComponent={MediumWrap} aText={Medium 'C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' is locked for reading by another task}, preserve=false aResultDetail=0

Also, noticed the Windows 8.1 machine with the invalids RAID 0 BOINC partition was underperforming by 35%.
Reformated to 32kb blocks from 4kb blocks but still 100% invalid results.

Hello

More than 450 tasks processed on my (old) iMac and only 8 tasks in error : cool.

All these errors between yesterday and today, though.

Check this one. (log is too long for me to post it here)

I confirm the memory requirement is quite high on the mac too (up to 2 GB per task), even with a 16 GB RAM machine I had to limit to 4 tasks at a time to keep a usable machine.

If you pause the WU's then open Virtual Box Manager and look at the settings on the boinc2docker; it has the VM's set to use 3072MB of RAM, although once running on the host, they never seem to require more than 1.7GB of committed (RAM+swap) on Windows 7 but haven't inspected every task and they could potentially peak at 3GB usage.

I would love to use all the memory I have. The main problem for me (I can live with the errors for now) is that the work units are too short. They run for less than 5 minutes, and usually less than 3 minutes, especially on my new i7-9700. That fills up my BoincTasks log, and also creates a lot of network traffic. How about 1 hour work units, though 2 would be better?

The nanohub tasks do not seem to have a peaceful coexistence with other projects running at the same time (I always do this), especially if you have to reduce the number of tasks due to resources consumption. I was forced to reduce to 3 at the same time, and i had odd behavior of tasks "not running for a long time" (and not using any CPU), or kinda blocking the other projects tasks to run...

Also it downloaded a huge number of tasks (several hundreds) when I have a reduced cache setting (one or two days max), the deadline was getting close and I had to cancel a whole bunch (I didn't wait for boinc to do this eventually).

At the moment it is not requesting nH again anymore because it is happy crunching other projects, but I assume it will again .

Hi.
I'm running an i5 with only vbox projects on two of its cores: Cosmology, LHC and NanoHUB.
While the others occupy both cores per work-unit, NanoHUB only uses one, thus running two work-units at a time.
Rotation with the other projects is just fine.

Don't observe the behavior on my other machines though.

When can we expect new WUs?

Would it be possible to know something about the project we are currently working on? That would be very interesting and also provide an incentive to keep working on the project.
Thanks!

We have 209 different simulators supported by this project. We don't have the resources to maintain native versions of so many tools, especially for Windows.

What you do have, though, is a community of people, some of whom are professional software engineers and developers across various platforms.

Maybe volunteer can help the implementation of VirtualBox 6.x, instead 5.x..
Or, maybe, a gpu client :-P

The tasks only run for several minutes on a CPU, in a VM. A GPU version is not the solution to every compute problem. You're a person with only a hammer as a tool and only see nails. Stop with the GPU suggestions.

I am wondering why they are so short. They are presumably created by students/researchers on a notebook. Why not just crunch them there?
They don't seem long enough to send out.

Good ones are relatively short. You get a lot of bad eggs amongst them which can run for much longer and end up as faulty.
It's been reported numerous times but not much has been done so far. Considering what you said about WUs being created by students it might mean that every new batch of WUs will have some tasks not done correctly.

No, I don't blame the students. It is the applications that have to be fixed; I think it has been said there are over 400 of them, and when errors are encountered they are fixed. That is why the error rate is slowly decreasing. But couldn't they be packaged up into longer units?

Quiet guy, i'm just kidding (and i've insert an emoticon).
If you're nervous, it's not my problem.

I see different wus: the most are running for 5/6 minutes, other 20 minutes and some others 2hs.
Different times, different simulations.

I don't either. And I am glad to hear that the error rate is decreasing. I didn't have a chance to crunch tasks from every new batch. From my personal experience, my last batch was the most successful. And I am hoping current one will be the same.

I wish that project admins could make their presence on this forum more often.
