Thanks for the update. That is what we need to know to prepare.
The last batch ran quite well; a few errors, but I am sure you can take care of them.

that would be okay, if the admins would communicate this.

Yes, I agree. We really don't know what is going on, and how our machines are being used. They need to tell us.

I keep the default buffer of 0.1 + 0.5 days, and have no problem with a 24 hour limit. It is entirely possible that some of this work is for student projects, and they may need the faster turnaround.

Not all projects are for all crunchers.

You are stating the problem, not the solution. They need to implement more realistic estimates.

one work unit now is at the 9 hour point; most finish in about 2 to 4 hours.

I ended it at the 11 hour point, as the CPU% continued to drop. Clearly, it was not doing any work.

I have not seen that error message, but I have had several that apparently got stuck. I am running on an i7-3770 (Ubuntu 16.04), and one work unit now is at the 9 hour point; most finish in about 2 to 4 hours. Also, the Progress % is shown at 100% on BoincTasks, and the CPU% is now decreasing.

I will let it go for a few more hours, and then get rid of it. It may be the same thing you see, but without the error message.

I did not see any multi-threaded work units. They each ran on a single core of my i7-3770 (Ubuntu 16.04, VBox 5.1.38).

But I did see high write-rates; about 190 GB/day (total for all the cores), though I did not notice which ones. I will check it again when I get more.

Thru, but then they should make somekind of statement of that on the frontpage.

I am all in favor of more communications when they have peculiar requirements. (They are still in the learning phase.)
At the moment, I have a couple of WUs that appear to be stuck, or maybe it is just a problem with the progress report. That will be interesting.

A longer deadline is the only option that will work for everybody.

Except perhaps the researchers. They may need a shorter time limit.

The present work units have an 8-hour time limit. So to ensure that I don't receive more work units than that, I am shortening the buffer to 0.1 + 0.15 days = 6 hours max.

Maybe nanoHUB has a built-in limit? I have not seen it yet.

My next download picked up 16 work units. That is much more reasonable, and I will have no problem finishing them in time.

When it rains, it pours. After getting nothing for months, I now have so many downloads I can not count them. And they all have a time limit of later today.

This will not work. I will abort them, and hope that the time estimates are better next time. I know, it is a learning curve.

It could be an anti-virus problem. Be sure to exclude the BOINC Data folder from the AV.
Sometimes you even need to stop the AV entirely. (I use dedicated machines, and avoid AV's like the plague.)

If I run this project it seems to write several GB every minute on my ssd.

Thanks for the warning. I haven't received any work to even check it.

But I use a write-cache (or place the BOINC Data folder on a ramdisk) in that case.
For Windows, I use PrimoCache or Primo Ramdisk Pro (Dataram RAMDisk also works).
For Linux, you can set up a write cache of any size by just increasing the parameters of the built-in write cache.

Of course, you need enough DRAM to do any good; probably 2 GB at least, though I usually do 8 to 12 GB for the cache/ramdisk (beyond what you otherwise need).
If anyone needs setup info, I can provide it; even better if/when I get any work to test it out here.

All of the applications are marked "vbox64_mt". Do they require VirtualBox?

You would think they would say so someplace.

I don't think we are causing the problem. I don't get any on BOINC.

I get "Error in request message: xp.get_tag() failed" also on both a Win7 64-bit machine (i7-4771) and an Ubuntu 16.04 machine (i7-3770) each time I request a work unit.
